Add to Cart Still Allows Unserviceable Zipcodes – How Do I Enforce the Restriction?

The zipcode check works, but customers can still add out-of-area products to the cart? That means the restriction isn’t switched on yet, or the product doesn’t have a rule assigned. Run through these three checks in order.

  1. Turn on the restriction. Go to Settings → General Settings and enable Add to Cart Restrictions. This is off by default — when it’s off, products add to the cart freely regardless of zipcode. With it on, a customer entering an undeliverable zipcode can’t add that product.
  2. Create a rule and assign it to the products. Validation only fires on products that actually have a rule:
    • Go to Settings → Create Zipcode Rule and create a whitelist rule containing the zipcodes you do deliver to.
    • Go to Settings → Assign Zipcode Rule → Assign Rule and assign that rule to the relevant products (All Products, an Individual Collection, or Individual Products).
    • Products with no rule assigned won’t be restricted — so make sure the ones you’re testing are covered.
  3. If your theme uses a custom Add to Cart / Buy Now button (common with COD apps or quick-buy buttons), the app may not recognize it. In Settings → General Settings, enable Custom selectors under Add to Cart and enter your button’s name attribute value in the Add to Cart Button Selector field.

Heads-up: if you’re using a Cash-on-Delivery or quick-add app, it can sometimes override the Add to Cart button entirely. If the three steps above don’t do it, that’s usually the cause — reach out and we’ll help debug the conflict.

Still stuck? Contact support with your store URL and the product you’re testing, and we’ll pinpoint it.
